Concentrations
Area of Concentration coursework is made up of 12 credit hours of substantive study in a particular field.
The Areas of Concentration include:

- Health and Human Services
- Nonprofits and Local Government
- Natural Resources
- Public and Nonprofit Finance
Students must select their concentration courses from Areas of Concentration. Other courses must be approved by their advisor and the department.
Criminal Justice
The Criminal Justice concentration prepares students for managerial, planning, and development careers in the court system, corrections, and law enforcement, as well as positions in local, state, or national government.
The boundaries between public and private sectors within the criminal justice system are becoming increasingly blurred—the criminal justice area of concentration provides a forum to investigate and evaluate the formation of coalitions arising between public policymakers and private entrepreneurs.

Health and Human Services
Students in the Health and Human Services concentration take classes in health care policy, economics, organization, and management.
The area also offers specialty courses with emphasis on the needs of particular patient groups such as the elderly and individuals with chronic illness, or on particular institutions such as hospitals, health maintenance organizations and long term care facilities.
This area of concentration provides the skills and knowledge necessary for careers in health care policy analysis or health care administration in the public, nonprofit and private health care sectors. Recent graduates in this area are employed in both public and private hospitals, health maintenance organizations, public health agencies, state health departments and community-based health care centers and specialty agencies.

Nonprofits and Local Government
The Nonprofits and Local Government concentration provides knowledge and skills for students seeking careers in nonprofit organizations or local government agencies.
Students develop a set of managerial skills including organization and financial management. They learn about target population needs and service delivery systems, particularly in the human and health-related services, and the role of nonprofits and local government in community life.
The concentration offers a variety of opportunities for real-world experience through meetings with agency management and with elected and appointed government officials, through participation in field internships, and through course-related projects provided by nonprofit and local government agencies.

Natural Resources
The Natural Resources concentration provides students with a comprehensive examination of the legal, social, economic and political aspects of designing, implementing and evaluating natural resource management systems and policies.
The area prepares students to manage natural resource-oriented public agencies and non-profit organizations and to develop and assess natural resource policies.
Students have the option of specializing in a particular resource area such as water.

Public and Nonprofit Finance
The Public and Nonprofit Finance concentration is designed for students with interests in the financial aspects of public and nonprofit organizations.
The concentration introduces students to managerial and political issues related to budget development, evaluation, and implementation.
Students develop the managerial and analytical skills related to revenue forecasting, investment analysis, debt management, and cost control necessary to coordinate and manage the financial resources of public and nonprofit organizations.
